Degrees and knowledge

An interesting article on the Indian engineering scene -
Techtree.com >> Degrees and knowledge

I kinda agree with the article. It really doesnt make any sense in hiring people from different engineering backgrounds just because they are toppers in their fields...

And another thing I have noticed is that most people who have taken up Computers or IT in engineering aren't really interested in this field...they have just taken it for the money and hype that surrounds it.

Thanks to this there are many students in the final year of CS or IT Engineering who cannot even write a simple C program! Maybe this explains why companies are hiring students of other branches?

Aptly put. I couldnt agree more.
Why just computer engineering?
In India, we seem to have a notion going that only on engineer or a doctor is worth respect. All others are wastes. An individual has to choose his vocation based on his aptitude and liking for a specific field. Only then can he succeed in his career. When you get to do something that you love, you are the happiest in this world. One should not bother whether the thing he/she loves is painting, singing, dancing or whatever be it. Goals of budding youngsters should not be so narrow as becoming computer engineers etc., but should be exceling in whatever field they choose.
Unfortunately, this deep rooted notion is a little difficult to uproot, and those who are brave will obviously have to encounter friction to flow against the stream. What is needed is the love and support of parents.
Companies like Infosys and Wipro hire people to do coolie work. Its unfortunate people's opinion on their life's future sways due to these companies.
